Mount Lemmon, about an hour outside Tucson is that city's own island sky Valhalla.
With an elevation of more than 9,000 feet it is one of the highest points in the Santa Catalina mountain range. The drive will take you through a myriad of changing eco-systems, beginning with the saguaro cactus forest which gradually gives way to woodlands and pine forests as you climb higher and higher. And the magnificent stone outcroppings resemble the temples of an ancient culture, or a giant's scattered toy building blocks. There's lots of fall color from the aspen, birch and alder trees. There's a ski resort.
The mountain is on average 20 to 30 degrees cooler than Tucson. Near its top is the tiny village of Summerhaven, where only a handful of people live full time. Despite its small size, there's lots to do and many pretty cabins and homes to rent with magnificent views of the mountain landscape.
There are many hiking trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds. Stop in Summerhaven and visit the Living Rainbow Gift Shop before grabbing a bite at Iron Door Restaurant at Ski Valley or the Sawmill Run Restaurant near the community center. Save room for a giant cookie at the Mt. Lemmon Cookie Cabin. Take home a souvenir or two from the Mt. Lemmon General Store and Gift Shop.
